Gotska Sandön -natures' paradise

Gotska Sandön -natures' paradise

This time of year it's wonderful to take a weekend at Gotska Sandön, a national park island, ca 5x8km big, and situated in the middle of the baltic, northeast of Gotland.

The island is open for tourism during the summer and has a camping where you can spend the night. Gotska Sandön, the Gotlandic island of sand, is like the name says, all made of sand, but cultivated with wood to keep it in place. In old times it was used to hunt seals, and during the 1800 there actually lived about 10 families there, working with the wood. They also had a train track to transport the lumber to the waterfront! Today it's only the lighthouse keeper that lives there all year round, must be a lonesome life! But also intriguing...
The island doesn't have a harbor, so they use a specialized boat to transport people, and depending on the wind sometimes the only way to get there is with a helicopter.
The nature is very special and beautiful, and you can visit the old habitations, some of them covered in sand dunes, listen to the singing seals and walk, walk, walk... It's really a paradise on the earth, a perfect get-away for nature lovers!
